Box of Basics

Fresh Start: Box of Basics

Let’s start with why

Food insecurity is a pervasive, ongoing issue across the Eastern Panhandle. It is strongly correlated with poor outcomes in diet, health and quality of life. Nutrition insecurity, or lack of access to healthy food, is a key contributor to this problem. Even when healthy foods are offered at food pantries, many recipients feel uncomfortable preparing these foods. This leads to unresolved nutritional needs and preventable food waste.

What is the Fresh Start: Box of Basics

The Fresh Start: Box of Basics focuses on the development of basic cooking skills with an emphasis on the utilization of fresh produce. Fresh Start: Box of Basics participants will receive a “Box of Basics” supply kit that offers the essential cookware and pantry staples for establishing a home cooking routine. The box will also include a “Book of Basics” cookbook with healthy, palatable, simple, and affordable recipes. Along with the box and the book, JuLEP will pair all recipients with a mentor for fun, practical cooking education classes.

Who can be a Fresh Start: Box of Basics participant?

Young adults and teens transitioning into adulthood who participate in food security programs are ideal recipients of Fresh Start: Box of Basics. Our goal is to build a foundation of skills, knowledge and confidence that will develop into lifelong healthy nutrition habits.
