Junior League of the Eastern Panhandle as we work to

make an impact in our community!

As we excitedly look ahead to our fourth operational year as the Junior League of the Eastern Panhandle (JuLEP), we want to recognize the impact we were able to make throughout the 2022-2023 year, thanks to the support of our generous sponsors, enthusiastic community, and dedicated members. Here are just some ways that JuLEP was able to make a difference right here in our local community.

*We hosted our first “Give Back to the Future” event where we were able to raise classroom supplies and donations for 29 local teachers.

*Donated $690 to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through Cordell’s Cornhole for a Cure.

*We were able to decorate 180 ornaments that were delivered with holiday meals for members of the Meals on Wheels program.

*We assisted in packing over 100 holiday household boxes with Berk County Backpack Program

*We assembled and donated 15 Valentine’s Self-Care Bags to moms of Young Life.

*We donated 986 pads, 456 tampons, 156 feminine wipes, 7 leggings and 2 menstrual cups to Stars that Shine.

*We donated $650.00 to Berkeley county schools towards the BCS Child Nutrition “Angel Fund” which assists with paying off outstanding school meal balances.

In our 2023-2024 JuLEP year, we look forward to expanding our reach by increasing membership and partnering with more established community partners to make an even bigger impact in the Eastern Panhandle. We are also excited to be continuing with our project that will focus on our mission to help fight food insecurity, Fresh Start: A Box of Basics.

The Fresh Start: Box of Basics Program (FSBB) seeks to improve nutrition security and long-term dietary health among transitional-age foster youth and adolescent mothers through cooking, education, relationship-building, and resource maximization. In an effort to foster healthy lifestyle habits and skills that protect the wellbeing of these individuals and their families, the FSBB Program will provide participants with fun, practical cooking education classes; a “Box of Basics” supply kit that offers the essential cookware and pantry staples for establishing a home cooking routine; a mentorship program, and a “Book of Basics” cookbook with healthy, palatable, simple, and affordable recipes. With these tools, program mentors will help participants fully utilize the nutritious but unfamiliar foods they receive from food pantries and farm-to-family programs, thereby promoting long-term health and self-efficacy for participants, minimizing preventable food waste, and establishing positive social relationships over a delicious meal. This program is a pilot initiative that has strong potential to become a successful, replicable education model that actively addresses ongoing challenges experienced by some of the most vulnerable populations in our community.

Each box comes with a price tag of approximately $200, making funding for these boxes one of the biggest challenges for this project. We have received funding for 12 boxes as well as training in Servsafe Food Handler training for mentors in order to be able to work with recipients.

In addition to funding community projects like FSBB, your contribution helps provide resources to train our members to serve as volunteer leaders throughout our community. Your generosity is critical in providing the women of JuLEP with the support we need to truly make an impact in our community.
